The Kansas State Board of Education is planning on spending tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars to stage a series of hearings intended to showcase a theology known as Intelligent Design creationism as a substitute for science, replacing science standards carefully developed by a committee appointed by the board. The Coalition for Science was formed to support the adoption of the standards written by the science standards writing committee. The coalition rejects the show-trial hearings, whose purpose is to make it appear that Intelligent Design creationism and the well-established science of evolution are on equal footing.
Kansas Citizens for Science called for a boycott of these show-trial hearings by scientists, and few if any will be appearing. But scientists do have much to say about the value of science and strong science educational standards in Kansas. This coalition and web site give scientists a much needed voice before the public and national and local media. Several of the member organizations:
- The Kansas Academy of Science
- Kansas Citizens For Science
- Kansas Families United for Public Education
- The Mainstream Coalition
- Kansas Association of Biology Teachers
- Kansas Association of Teachers of Science
